Cattle of Choice for Lifestyle and Performance

bot1 Our story began on Saturday February 8th, 1992, when John and Margaret Thompson of Narramidgee Dexter Stud had a few people visit their property to view their Grade 1, 2 and 3 Dexters. The enthusiasm on that day led to another get-together a week later at Ellyn and Ron Howes' Bindalee Dexter Stud and from there the group, (known then as the ACT/Monaro Promotion Group) came into being.

The area encompassed within the Dexter Group of South-East NSW includes the magnificent coastal regions from Nowra down to Eden ("from the mountains to the sea"), the Monaro "Platypus Country", and ACT/Canberra, the Nation's Capital. We also have members from far eastern Victorian timber country.

The extreme geographic, cultural and climatic diversities within our region allow opportunities for a variety of farming enterprises as undertaken by members; and indicates the extremes in which the versatile, adaptable Dexter can thrive. We have members from a wide range of backgrounds engaged in a diverse array of professions, all of whom contribute to the vibrant culture of our comparatively small group.

Within our group we also have both extremes of Dexter cattle management experience. The majority, however, fit somewhere in between these parameters, running several cows with calves at foot for most of the year, sometimes taking enough milk for the family, trying our hand at butter, yoghurt and cheese, and occasionally growing a calf for the home freezer. Some of our members are relatively new to farm animals and others are old hands at farming, as shown by our chairperson, Edith Hammond in our 'Milking Dexters' section.

We are as diverse as our region, the common bond being our dedication to the Dexter breed of cattle, and the genuine interest, concern and friendship we offer to new members and visitors who are always most welcome to visit our studs and to partake in all our activites.
